Wendy Van Huyssteen " Peace Filled" oil on canvas

Restoring light, Light within, Church light, Peace filled light are all good titles for this painting that beckons the viewer to stop in their fast paced tracks and dwell a little in this space. For Wendy Van Huyssteen this was indeed the reason she painted and captured the famous church in Greece,seen on a recent family holiday, subject of inspiration to many an artist. 

The photograph depicted the windows as dark . The underpainting of burn’t sienna hinted at making the glow in the window expressing the warmth of the memory.
The blues painted from freshly bought tubes of Maimeri “Puro” (Pure) gave the intense lustre that the mediterranean coastline provides. The velvet concrete making the roof mimics the colour of the summer ocean, the angles of whites in many values, dancing greens of bougainvillea, distant haze of rugged landscape all come together to create an appealing painting.

I felt it apt to end this years blogging with this artwork and wish you all a very peace filled Christmas where memories are made, and joy is charged within. May all your lights keep on burning and may 2015 be one filled with hope, tranquility and peace.

Green fields fall upon Virginia Preparatory School

Today was my only daughters last day at Virginia Preparatory School. As I painted this for the headmaster Mr Wayne Bannister, I pondered on the meaning of this for me, for her, for us all as a family. A chapter closes on a part of youth and opens onto teenage years. Luisa Ruth, you have grasped these years and excelled . May the best memories of these formative years be likened to these green fields overlooking the city of Durban. May you be the master of your own scoreboard and run this race called life at your pace and with grace continue to embrace challenges, joys and adventures, may your boundaries fall upon pleasant Virginia...thank you!

A memorial memory of Pete Ferraz

Should I rather say that Pete's spirit lives on.... After the recent death of the founder of Splashy Fen, we found ourselves drawn to attend the memorial service of a man who had become very much a presence in our lives. My husband and I journeyed the road trip from Durban to the farm of Splashy Fen to pay our respects to a wonderful family. I noted with a lump in my throat the many cars descending the rolly polly hillside, creating a dust trail behind them, as they approached the Riverside Cottage.
With memorials comes a reconnection of many past relationships  , memories relived and with this one, for us, the distance travelled was as long as this relationship. I had met Pete and Almary shortly after Andrew and I had met. It was one of the first courting weekends away. Thereafter followed many family holidays whilst the kids were little and also times of healing retreats whilst my aunt was in remission from cancer. Lazy afternoons spent sketching was a favoured past time. 


Warm breezes inspired us to slow down, our eyes feasting on the hills,
  our tummies full of experimental cuisine. Pete loved cooking and appreciated portuguese tastes. Proud of his portuguese roots, he had once gone off to Portugal to a banquet of many Ferraz"s.

As we arrived we were met by Penny,  Pete's daughter,jewellery designer and friend. She'd read out of psalm 24 and  104. Strong believers, Pete had left a message to sing the hymns with "gusto".

The second person we embraced in her corn blue dress, eyes the shade of bright skies, Almary! On seeing Andrew she shed a tear for the relationship went back further than Andrew was born. I'll let Andrew fill in the details... but at this point I share that Andrew's sister and mum could not be here as they were both in France at the time...

Andrew's reflections: "Its not often we can reflect on someone's life and say that they truly lived their dreams, but with Peter Ferraz that was certainly the case. I recall him sharing his dream to start a trout farm and thinking that he was smoking his socks but he and Almary made it happen. A man of great enthusiasm Pete went for things with a passion. I recall long evenings spent in rambling conversations on all manner of topics. He was always great to talk to as he had read so widely and held strong opinions which he was willing to share and debate. Setting off on a walk from Splashy Fen with Pete (and the ubiquitous dogs) was always an adventure as you could never be sure where you would end up - or at who's house. Fortunately for us his legacy lives on in another of his dreams as the Splashy Fen Music Festival- A tribute to a life well lived."

Matopos mountains - spiritual home. He had managed to experience them with his wife and four girls shortly before he died.
Always late , Robin Church said, ...but never let you down and was always worth waiting for. A
creative intellect that drank in everything to do with journalism. He himself a journalist , had worked with Andrew's father, back in the day, at the Star... had covered the watergate scandal in America and never stopped pursuing truth.

The horses of past have come and gone and onward I trot to new pastures.

 Last night was the opening of the Durban Girls College Art exhibition. As guest speaker I tire of repeating my chats and decided to interview the 16 girls and glean an understanding of each girls heart . With that came about 16 hours of research with the challenge of creating a speech under 16 minutes. This including a brief of course.
Thank God my head was clear and onward I talked together with a slide presentation dedicated to honour these ladies. The question asked was why art had been taken, and then what challenges had they come across that perhaps made them grow in self realisation or in awareness of sorts.

On asking the girls why art had been taken, the answers varied...
as a means to  relax ones anxious or hyper personality,  always drawn to it, always considered it, enjoyed it, a natural way of expressing for visual learners(Eva), a tool in which to express oneself , in which to express ones emotion, as a mental escape, a means of exploration, an opportunity to explore with new materials, an opportunity to think out the box, a means to reach independent thinking, a means to equip one in producing portfolios to get into university, a means to establish ones own values and to be able to walk barefoot, listen to music and chat to the teacher (Minal) who makes art very exciting!

When the girls were asked what some of their challenges in art had taught them, an astounding number replied that art had taught them to be excellent managers of their time.   Art is a very jealous baby, all absorbing and demanding, and one has to be able to gather ones thoughts and stay “composed”(Elizabeth). Character traits such as self discipline, dedication, determination and perseverance were developed. Art led to independent thought , it provided opportunity to explore things one would not naturally look at. Art led to creative problem solving... and looking at the work these girls have produced , it is safe to agree with some who said that art taught them that often the simplest thing has a deeper meaning.

I have taken the liberty of using the girls works as setting the tone for some of the issues they have looked at. I have focused on what I recognised as four categories. These are a look at areas of the Mind( freedom of thought,opening doors, deterioration with illness and healing), Identity and with that a look at Stereotypes, First Impressions and Truth, a look at the Narcissistic in our “Me Generation and finally a look at social awareness.

Mrs Joan Martin was where I began. Her birds set in Resin or textured or imprinted allowed me to introduce Elizabeth Ro's idea of using origami birds as symbols for freedom of thought.

Also under the theme  Absence / Presence Loren Dibb decided to title her art piece “ Open with caution”, again the therapeutic art of “making with your hands” had Loren make each face out of air dry clay, leaving out the mouth because it just did not look right added to the strength of the piece. Her research dealt with the human mind, no mouth, no speech  draws attention then to the psyche, the thing we cannot see but indeed has a very tangible presence.  The door, a opening or a closing in the mind. the mind enabled her to understand why people behaved as they did. Her influences are interesting as this work has a surrealist edge to it and Dali, founder of Surrealism was indeed an inspiration for Loren. Interestingly Loren, not sure you noticed the co incidence of the number of faces you made? 52! 52 weeks in a year??

Minal Mehdi

From healthy mind possibilities we go onto the mind that is deteriorating and see how a disease such as ALTZEIMERS begins in the brain, moves to the body, the feet, the hands and then lastly “the heart forgets to beat” (Minal). A personal experience of her own grandmother, MINAL MEHDI looks at her loss and tenderly uses string to connect. Uses  “forget me not “ flowers emphasising the loss and the remembrance, black flowers to symbolise the death and in the end produces a moving homage to her grandmother. The memory card game in the background is also a play on the disease, drawings of her grandmother seen on some cards. An apt response to the theme Absence/Presence.

Eva Church

From illness to Healing I introduce you to the work of EVA CHURCH who finds the process of art utterly consuming and hence healing. Having been home schooled after falling quiet ill, flowers for her became a symbol of hope and their healing properties very meaningful. Her work was seen at this years Artspace exhibition showcasing some IEB schools matric art. Botanical drawings is something she was shown to do since she was 7 years of age. 
“Healing through flowers” then is about  all that.

Sonali Bissasser

We now move onto issues around IDENTITY with this young lady called SONALI BISSASSER. She looks at her identity within the greater world of people. I too identified with some elements of this work. I immediately saw the teensy lone figure camouflaged in the cap of the jar trying to melt away. How many of us at some stage of our lives feel a bit like bambi in the spotlight or nemo in the big ocean trying to discover who we are. We need to always remember that both Bambi and Nemo became the inspiration and the main character in the very films named after them.  

Keyla Aufrichtig
ARTIFICE” means a clever trick, a crafty or subtle deception. An apt title from this years winner of the IEB competition exhibition at Artspace. A mobile installation representing different personality types. KEYLA AUFRICHTIG highlights through the use of fabric how people yearn to stay in their comfort zones and in that identity one finds a whole lot of self deception. And that by not having the courage to step outside of those comfort zones, one loses the opportunity to grow. 

This concept reminds me of my own research into the world of the shadow where Jung speaks of one”s “gold in the shadow” that if denied leads to self deception and if embraced  opens up a beautiful room for growth in reaching one’s true potential.
Chanel Van Eerden

Seeing past BRAND NAMES such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Addidas etc , CHANEL VAN EERDEN reminds us that we are all human , wearing skin actually.  This work shows circles of butterflies, themselves printed with brand names onto their wings and ironically pinned down dead as in museums. The circles surround Hollywood where the fashion of celebrities dictates the worlds clothing, China where most things are made and Africa where Chanel lives. Interestingly when you look at this image, the form of butterflies resemble a masque used in masquerade balls, identity hidden away under the surface of fabric.
Zahraa Noorbhai

ZAHRAA NOORBHAI recognises that social media can often give off a false persona. Her work , “No Face without Facebook” is about how we box people. The process of approaching strangers to ask permission to photograph them, was initially daunting but valuable research for this work. Zahraa was surprised at the warm response. This exercise encouraged her to really look at people in a new light and to question before conforming to trends. In the process Zahraa looks at how Facebook is used as social media in order to impress others and enhance their identity.

What is the "ME GENERATION?"
Paula Macnab

From a room full of boxes we move onto a wall installation of cubes. PAULA MACNAB’S WORK deals with stereotypes in a narcissistic world. Are we such a self absorbed society? In an attempt to step outside her bubble, Paula really looks at and  begins to draw the people around her, hence placing the spotlight onto the other. She references psychologist Jean Twenge’s description of todays youth as “Generation Me” and chooses to step outside her bubble and see beyond first impressions. Concern with ones uncertain finances in a struggling economic climate could be reason for Generation Me, Paula wrote. This work makes use of sticky notes with words such as anxious. Lifting it up, one reads the real emotion from the person, perhaps not anxious
Kelly Gibbons
 but reflective. This work warns us not to judge but to rather enquire the real emotion behind first impressions.

KELLY GIBBON looks at a mutated abstract DNA molecule and creates this thing which to me resembles an abstract figure, out of different coloured can tabs. Different colours represent different people. Mirror is embedded in their so this includes the viewer too.  The to challenge to the viewer to question the self centered aspect of our character is posed.. Her research took her to listening to the words of contemporary poetry, songs etc and was shocked at the realisation that although the tune might be great, the words were all about self, me, me...

Tarryn Jacoby
TARRYN JACOBY ‘s artwork investigated concepts such as Feminism and the female figure as an object, Slavery and Personality disorders. Cleverly she  uses a blind to displays some of these concepts. When it is closed the viewer can see and when it is open, they cannot see the images painted onto it. The question posed here is significant.
Are we in society blinded. Do we fail to see past real issues. Do we choose to stay ignorant. Do we choose to draw the blinds. 


Finally we move onto 5 girls who looked at what is going on around them and added their take on it. 

Stephanie Trevethan
STEPHANIE TREVETHAN looks at the theme of the alcoholic and truthfully calls her piece BROKEN ALCOHOLIC. Made up of broken glass she successfully attempts to glue the pieces of coloured glass to make up a larger than life portrait. Also exhibited at Artspace, it is a tender comment on how alcohol can make you present in body yet so absent in mind. The cork made shirt amplifies the rhythm of this addiction. Taking 3 months to complete, it gave Stephanie confidence to consider studying Fine Arts.

Into Africa we go...

Georgina Wilkes
GEORGINA WILKES carefully makes up many faces to fill the shape of Africa. These faces grouped together “symbolise the people of Africa seen by outsiders who believe the people of Africa are faceless and uneducated,” It suspended on a perspex board in mid air. “ This received a merit at the Artspace exhibition. Have you ever tried to work with thin wire?  Intricate work demanding very fine motor skills and patience.

Simone Dance
SIMONE DANCE looks at the practice that threatens to extinguish the lions in our Africa. Killing lions is cheaper than tigers. Lion bone wine is believed to have much power in China. So the process of taking lions into smaller enclosures(canned hunting) to make it easier targets has become popular. Simone begins to draw lions on the very paper that wraps our lion match boxes . The symbol of a match put to light further inspires her to burn the paper, decreasing the images into smaller sections until one is left with the word gone”. Nothing more needs to be said.

Catherine Hardy
“A wave of Consciousness” is the title of CATHERINE HARDY’S art piece. Catherine mentions how we want to be immortal but just like nature we return to dust. Forces of nature are too great, their cyclical rhythms like the waves “gather momentum before engulfing their surrounds” . The impressive wave made of dead dying palm fronds forms an undeniable presence in the classroom and acts as a reminder that no one can escape death, and life after death to some remains a question mark. 

Rebecca Plumbley
Grandmothers and mothers like to hold something tangible and art provides that vehicle for remembrance. Rebecca Plumbley asked one hundred people from teachers to family and friends to donate a memory. She bound these together to form a curtain and with this in mind I draw the curtains to this show and hope that as you walk into the Art classroom tonight you’ll recognise some of the themes, and be able to commend these girls on a job well done and for making significant and meaningful work for us their community to see and share.

And with this I paused my talk and in essence drew the curtain to my presentation and then the parents and friends and family walked across to the Art Classroom and were further astounded by the significant and meaningful work that these wonderful girls had created. Well done .....ART IS LIFE.

This magnificent horse was inspired by a photograph taken by Katherine Venniker. Very Rarely do I use another s photograph but this one I could not resist. A "Stud from Summerhill called Solskjaer". The play on the letter "S" fitted in with the developing titles for the other little paintings exhibited at the moment at the Elizabeth Gordan Fine Art Gallery, 120 Florida Road, Durban. The show is on until the 11 October 2014. So thank you Katherine for sharing this. Stallion Joy grew from the dust in my mind, the stroke of my brush...

Celebrating small but significant marks in a busy world.

Art Groups have so many reasons for being. Being a teacher in one has made me grow and live many experiences through the eyes of the people that walk through my doors and share the studio space.

Debi Frizelle is one such lady, and I feel a good example of noticing the little marks present in our daily lives. One day I was fetching my daughter from Acrobats when the teacher, Debi Frizelle , herself called me in to see something... there on the floor of the studio was "Fluzy" an impression that reminded her of her beloved dog. That day she added pencil to this impression on the cement floor. Now that is fusing art with life indeed.

Talented supreme, Debi has gone on to win many golden awards for her calligraphy year after year at the annual Royal show and indeed, she came fourth in a recent drawing competition out of 80 entries at the Artisan Gallery.
Debi's father inspired me to paint him as the legend ( find the painting under Faces, Fields, Forests and Fantasy). He is a perfect example of an artisan, someone who is able to produce fine work from whatever his hands touch, be it making the easels from my studio, dabbling with paint in his youth and fixing up vintage cars, nothing was too impossible. On one of our visits, my son and his friend were so inspired by this man s spirit that they came home to bang together a wooden table for my studio.
Deb's mother was equally talented in producing magnificent carvings out of wood, tables, clocks, headboards and such. And of course we were blessed and touched when Shirley or what I called her " Serenity", produced a fine embroidered bag for my little girl. Their home in Glenwood is a pleasure to seek out for it's heavy laden in history and love of family. This family will always be remembered by me, folk come across your path, and one knows one will not forget.

Debi carries the blessing of her parents generation in her loyalty and faithfulness towards her family, and to her acrobat girls that grace her studio. Her delicate gifts of flowers and orchards to me over the years remind me of the soft way in which she paints. Brush marks are not her thing for her love for perfection and stroking of surfaces with colours that vibrate in quiet luminosity gives her great pleasure to see.

As we embark on yet another Acrobat championship this year, we wish you all the blessings of unity and glory that that brings and in this month of September we wish you a wonderful birthday month, we celebrate you...

13 September 2014,walkabout at Kznsa


What a pleasure it was to do the  walkabout of Lara Mellon and Joan Martin's work yesterday.The audience and I conversed with the work and with the artists.

Collaboration has taken place throughout the history of art. It happened between the old masters and their apprentices, it happened with the impressionists, both opening up opportunities for conversations but also as a means of standing “not alone”. 
The latter is certainly true of this exhibition where the respected relationship between Lara and Joan allowed for their to be a feeling of support and input. 

Joan's work, skilfully drawn, pushing line to dance in every which way, elements of shape clearly defined, together with Lara ,whose boundaries become blurred, the  “mush mash “(as Lara describes) of a reality blurring its borders into another world both take us , the audience to other  head spaces. Both women physically  work and scrub their surfaces before the art work can be born. Both construct and deconstruct until the feeling within them is at peace and the work is laid to rest on the gallery wall. Both two different people come together in this exhibition, both women meet on this stage of their life and CONVERSE! CO INSPECT ,  CONNECT! (CO-LABOUR)ATE and COMMUNICATE to us in their COMMUNITY.

Joan came across some beautiful words written to her by Lara over a year ago and I now share this...In expressing the obvious NEED for each others input, Lara used words such as “INTEGRATED”, that “ the work needed to depict not only a conversation but something of each other in the work...each others strengths pushing and pulling  on the others” 

The term to collaborate has and should be increasingly popular in the 20th century society we live in today. Many note how the pace of life has picked up from the slow trot of a horse to the speed of a car on highways flashing 120km as the speed limit. And still that is not fast enough.
Despite the technological age we live in, where mails of conversation go back and forth like the ebb and flow of the tide that licks our very shores, there is still a sense of 
“fomo” - fear of missing out, bewilderment  and isolation.

On asking Joan about some of the benefits of collaborating , Joan responded that it not only made them as artists “more productive but often led to a refinement  of ideas through discussion. The support when feeling unsure about the work, disenchanted with an artists life was invaluable”.

The postcard series evident in this exhibition is worth spending some time on.
More than the exchange on paper was what goes behind the scene, backstage and that is this.... the act of transferring the card across to the other brings about a physical connection  that the computer cannot offer for in that very moment of anything from 5 to 15 minutes , there is a reading of body language, warmth of touch, gift of giving, an affirmation in words such as “ this is wonderful, thank you, I am grateful”. 

The physical exchange in the postcard offers each other ...a gift of time . Time given to themselves and to each other to value the moment of meeting enough to get off the highway and stop to respond to the other person. 

Gary Chapman, professional counsellor and relationship expert speaks about  the five love languages of “words of affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service and Physical Touch” These simple categories I believe have gone into the success of this collaboration. The postcard series alone incorporate these characteristics and furthermore the audience can feel it. In the artists vulnerability to share such thoughts, a tenderness is fragranced to us like incense and we are able to identify with significant and meaningful thoughts, findings and at times give words to our very own emotions swimming in our minds landscapes.

LOVE is not the answer to everything but it does create a climate of security in which we can seek out answers , ask questions, construct, throw out , rub out and redo. The rewards of this love and trust is that the best of each other will be brought out. Incidentally, talking on the topic of love, behind the scenes two men work hard each time these two women exhibit. Fred and Patrick , Joan and Lara s husbands respectively take up their hammer, drill bits and precise engineering skills to hang the exhibition for them...the co-(labour)ation goes beyond just the artists  and I am sure they are well appreciated ! 

The conversation that transpires out of this collaborative exhibition...the one that both artists are well aware with the audience. 
The conversation between Joan and Lara extends to us the viewer for as much as they were seeking and discovering the secrets in the undergrowth of the forests, so do you and I discover little gems... we find Sam beckoning us to look deeper as he lazily gazes out at us and in another image he looks away and our eyes follow his gaze to discover other symbols and elements of the exhibition. Andile Andries Ndlovu  had wonderful observations to share about Joan's trees, fascinated by the actual production of the work, the many hidden symbols found within it, he engaged Joan in discussion. 

We find the Vasco da Gama monument  entitled“ Monument” with historical significance constructed of paper, fragile looking. Unbeknown to Joan at the time ,this  monument was abandoned. Joan was working on this when I received a email from the portuguese consulate asking people to sign a petition in order to preserve and restore this monument. Just this week Joan connected with the consulate. And here it is bringing about public awareness.

We find butterflies in Lara’s “ Dreams Up ahead”,  symbolic of freedom, transformation trapped beautifully in resin . Reading deeper I am reminded that Lara founded the non profit organisation everyone counts which raised money for various charity organisations  to assist in abandoned babies and more recently the “Speak Art Against Human Trafficking”. 

Both Lara and Joan collaborated on this massive time consuming project for the betterment of society. It is therefore apt that the very gallery that housed the latest everyone counts exhibition , now displays these two incredibly able, community orientated artists.

Let us now meander for a moment and discover “things”.... In the walkabout yesterday I asked the artists questions, some  folk ( thanks Rayne Dancaster and Daryl houghton ) read out from the postcard series and so began  I encourage  a living extension of these artists conversations..  enjoy and relax in the moment now and take a look at these artists websites.

Finally the art of conversation becomes a melting pot of good food for those who see and experience it, for not only are we exposed to a world of escape, different reflections and encouraged to participate but we then add to the response and by sharing about it to others the circle opens up. Being authentic in conversation and in art making leads to a successful result , with more people identifying with the work. This is what makes this exhibition successful and what makes us sit in community. 

Poignantly the words under the exhibit in the mezzanine summed up the feeling in this exhibition, I share this with you now....have a blessed week.

As a teacher one always wants to empower and inspire those who share the studio space. The reward for hard work is refreshing . I again saw this today at the completion of yet another drawing course. This student is seen here perusing her first portrait ever done. In short of an hour and a half she called on all the tools taught to her and instinctively tapped into her creator to recreate the face of another  found to be so interesting to her. The hollow velvet sound of her charcoal skimmed and scraped the surface of the paper, her putty eraser pulling away to reveal the whispers of light . These moments fill me to beyond full. Well done Kim! Your hard work, patience and perseverance has been worth the journey.

My Joshua John turned 6 months the other day.
It feels like another lifetime since I pressed the pause button of teaching in my studio in order to focus on this little big exhibition.

Gods Grace shone down on us as a family when Joshua was born and the story of an older couple having a "laat lammetjie" certainly challenged our perception of reality. Having had the miracle and bursting with love, I could not have painted him any better into the fabric of our lives. Our children,  Luisa aged 12( left) and Luke aged 15(below), have embraced this bundle of all sorts with such honour and praise. I am proud of them.

Time stands still. The daily doing required of my hands has replaced the brush and oil paints for now. 

Sleepy moments wrapped in the arms of peace carried me through Joshua s two colicky months.
Now that he is sitting, laughing and gurgling, I cannot resist kissing his firm, cool, rounded cheeks and gaze upon the biggest distraction in my life. Thank God it is an appointed one for a mother and no guilt need creep selfishly into my being.

My daily doodling and sketching has been sporadic and replaced with moments of research and reading to better the environment of my students. AH! This contact I have missed and as I reopened my doors recently to people wanting to create in a safe haven, my spirit soared strong and I smile contently today.

I cannot wait to share with you some of the stories that occur inside the walls of Ana s  Studio. Some of the folk that have blossomed and shone, and today are testament to the power of art in bringing one to a place of peace, self realisation , and much like laughter, the act of making has brought them "good medicine" in this world under heaven.
